vanitas
Departing from a series of drawing on paper, I seek to explore the theme of life and remembrance of death in our contemporary context, seeking to create not a grand narrative but rather little narratives that hint ideas of their underlying meaning.
The human skull that symbolises the embodiment of death and once life is inescapable in our discussion of life and death. Although sharing the same base composition of carbon, the human skull, Damien Hirst’s diamond encrusted skull and my sculptural representation in mechanical pencil lead speaks of different aspects of death. While Damien Hirst’s skull proclaims victory over decay and represents death as something infinitely more relentless, my representation constructed using the fragile mechanical pencil lead seeks to suggests the temporal and corporeal state of mortality.
